Scope and Contents

"This boy is said to be defective as the result of meningitis. Said to have been brilliant until the age of 11. Father, retired farmer, well-to-do. Family drive a lot, always eating at Balmoral Hotel. [Male informant] says this boy was exceptionally bright until the age of 10 when he had ? scarlet fever. Since then has been deaf, looks very dull and retarted, is self-conscious, suffers badly from eczema, tries to keep away from people. His parents have made no effort to have him trained or specially taught. Dr confirms - post meningitis case, very deaf, asthma and eczema. Father a decent man. Mother " a tinker" (i.e. hopeless sort of woman) persuaded father to sell his farm - he now lives a life of leisure and both are hopelessly bored; both drink too much."
