This series contains the material extant from the Survey of Edinburgh undertaken by Geddes, Mears and others between c. 1890 and 1910. The Survey of Edinburgh also formed part of Geddes' Cities and Town Planning Exhibition. The Survey of Edinburgh exhibit was claimed by Geddes to be a "developed example of the Methods of Survey of Cities (Scottish, English and others) in progress for some years at the Outlook Tower, as applied to (a) to the teaching of Civics and (b) to Collegiate developments and City Improvements. Its significance...is as affording evidence of the necessity, practicability, and fruitfulness of a clear understanding for earch town and city (a) of its geographical situation (b) of its developing (and corresponding decline) at each important phase of its history from the earliest to most recent times."
