Ruins of Palmyra, 1753-1757
Scope and Contents
Part of a folio book containing 13 plates: produced by Robert Wood, James Dawkins and Giovanni Borra (Bouverie died early in the expedition) showing illustrations of an expedition to Palmyra from 14-27 March 1753. Allegedly, their primary goal was to explore the Troad and locate the key sites mentioned by Homer. They took careful measurements and drawings of the ancient Roman ruins of Palmyra and Baalbek. The resulting book was published between 1753-1757. The plates remaining are numbers 26, 46, 48-51, 54-56, 53 and 57. Part of a list of contents on page 49, with details of the plataes numbers 54-47. There are three blank sheets, one with an inscription in pencil, "wants Plates 15-19".
