Scope and Contents

This volume, the fourth of Adam White’s set of eight scrapbook albums, contains 230 items mounted on 160 pages.
The volume’s geographical coverage encompasses the historical Scottish counties of Perthshire (taking in part of the present-day Stirling council district), Kinross-shire, Clackmannanshire, and Angus. This coverage includes illustrations of the topography and architecture of the cities of Perth and Dundee and prospects of towns such as Dunblane, Brechin and Montrose.
The buildings and antiquities depicted include the ecclesiastical, with representations of Dunblane and Dunkeld cathedrals, Arbroath Abbey and other survivals; and the military, in the ruins of Doune, Melgund and Red Castles.
The most notable category is however the domestic, with the aristocratic and landed country seats, from Scone Palace down, which abounded in this area. More than forty great or lesser houses are illustrated, many several times over.
Landscape views celebrate the region’s spectacular scenery – its lochs, waterfalls, mountains – centring on the Trossachs, Loch Tay and Tayside.
Much of this imagery plays to the Romantic view of the Highlands fostered by the developing tourist industry, while evoking the works of Scott – in particular, the Lady of the Lake and Loch Katrine – and the historical resonances of sites such as the battlefield of Killiecrankie.
In origin the plates range from the work of eighteenth-century antiquarians such as Grose and topographers such as Paul Sandby to contemporary nineteenth-century mass-market steel engravings and lithographs after artists such as Thomas Allom, J.P. Neale, and David Octavius Hill.
The original artworks contained in this volume include four sketches by Montague Stanley, eight drawings by the illustrator and wood engraver Ebenezer Landells, and a watercolour view of Perth attributed to Sandby.
