- Engraving of Sir Charles Lyell, President of the Geological Society 1836-7, 1850-51. Signed W.H. Mote SC.
- Photograph of an original oil painting of group portrait of Charles Lyell (centre) and his brothers Thomas and Henry. Photographer taken by J. Fairbairn Photographic Artist, Manse Close Bank Street, Kirriemuir.
- Photograph of the Misses Lyell (Charles Lyell's sisters) at Shielhill. The four eldery sisters sit together, with knitting, in the garden.

These items were received from Sotheby's filed with correspondence file 'Charles Lyell to his Family'. They were removed from the original file and listed as a series in their own right.
Custodial History
This series forms part of the Sir Charles Lyell papers which were transferred to the University of Edinburgh by the executors of the late Charles Lyell, 3rd Baron Lyell, after his death on 11 January 2017 via the UK HM Revenue and Customs Acceptance in Lieu of Inheritance Tax scheme. These papers were retained in private hands by the Lyell Family at Kinnordy House, Angus, Scotland and then briefly in the care of Sotheby's Auction House before their transfer to the University of Edinburgh in 2020.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Accepted in lieu of Inheritance Tax by H M Government and allocated to Edinburgh University Library, 2020.
