Scope and Contents

Series of printed addresses given by Charles Lyell, including:
1) Printed Address delivered at the Anniversary Meeting of the Geological Society of London, 15th Feb 1850 and awarding Wollaston Medal to Peter Hopkins. Unopened.
2) Printed Address delivered at the Anniversary Meeting of the Geological Society of London, 21st Feb 1851 and awarding Wollaston Medal to Adam Sedgwick. Unopened.
3) Manuscript speech delivered by Lyell at the [New York City] Crystal Palace Banquet, 1853 delivered in the absense of Earl of Ellesmere.
4) Printed Address at the 34th meeting of the British Association
5) Manuscript notes of Speech to the Anniversary dinner at the Geological Club, 5th November 1874.
6) Galley proof of an Address delivered to the Royal Institution, Friday 4th February, [1840s - after 1846] 'The Fossil footmarks of a reptile in the coal-formation of the Alleghany Mountains' but also covers the antiquity of Earth, and political freedoms in Pennysylvania.

On receipt of the collection from Sotheby's some manuscript notes for speeches and addresses were found to be filed with both the Journal Articles, and the Lectures. They have since been removed and are now brought together, filed in this single series.

Custodial History

This series forms part of the Sir Charles Lyell papers which were transferred to the University of Edinburgh by the executors of the late Charles Lyell, 3rd Baron Lyell, after his death on 11 January 2017 via the UK HM Revenue and Customs Acceptance in Lieu of Inheritance Tax scheme. These papers were retained in private hands by the Lyell Family at Kinnordy House, Angus, Scotland and then briefly in the care of Sotheby's Auction House before their transfer to the University of Edinburgh in 2020.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Accepted in lieu of Inheritance Tax by H M Government and allocated to Edinburgh University Library, 2020.
