Arrangement
The arrangement reflects the original order in which the collection was received from Sotheby's, excepting the file of papers of biographical interest which was a false series, and items from the biographical interest file have been incorporated into relevant series such as correspondence, and finance. Printed pamphlets, annotated journal articles; correspondence and a Special Report on the New York Industrial Exhibition (1854) were removed from this series and were incorporated into the relevant series.
Custodial History
This series forms part of the Sir Charles Lyell papers which were transferred to the University of Edinburgh by the executors of the late Charles Lyell, 3rd Baron Lyell, after his death on 11 January 2017 via the UK HM Revenue and Customs Acceptance in Lieu of Inheritance Tax scheme. These papers were retained in private hands by the Lyell Family at Kinnordy House, Angus, Scotland and then briefly in the care of Sotheby's Auction House before their transfer to the University of Edinburgh in 2020.
