Arrangement
This series originally formed part of the general correspondence received from Sotheby's in 2020, which was arranged alphabetically, and then chronogically. The letters to and from Christopher Kerr, G. A. Jamieson and Robert Forrest were removed as they were found to relate solely to the running of Kinnordy Estate, and were placed within this series. Within the series the letters are arranged alphabetically, and within that chronologically.
Custodial History
This series forms part of the Sir Charles Lyell papers which were transferred to the University of Edinburgh by the executors of the late Charles Lyell, 3rd Baron Lyell, after his death on 11 January 2017 via the UK HM Revenue and Customs Acceptance in Lieu of Inheritance Tax scheme. These papers were retained in private hands by the Lyell Family at Kinnordy House, Angus, Scotland and then briefly in the care of Sotheby's Auction House before their transfer to the University of Edinburgh in 2020.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Accepted in lieu of Inheritance Tax by H M Government and allocated to Edinburgh University Library, 2020.
