Scope and Contents
Labelled 'General Index' and noted as 'begins 1855' this volume appears to be the first of two General Indexes, with Coll-203/A5/2. Authors are listed alphabetically, with the titles of their works listed below, then the number of the tract (which corresponds with the series of bound Offprints). Created in 1855 the works included are not frequently dated as in Coll-203/A5/2, however appear to date from 1846 -1868. These two General Indexes (Coll-203/A5/1 and Coll-203/A5/2 are therefore the key to the authors and works that Lyell is reading - for example, works by Darwin are noted - and where that reading is bound into the bound Offprints.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements
Dark green soft leather bound notebook, front and back covers have a gold coloured thin line border, and gold coloured lines are detailed on spine which indicate position of binding stitches. Paginated in handwritten ink.
