Sermon notebook by Henry Clark, c 1766-1780

 Item — Box: CLX-A-1591
Identifier: Coll-1848/20-0048

Scope and Contents

This is the personal notebook of reverend Henry Clark, vicar of the Anti-Burgher seceder congregation at Boghole from 1763 to 1809, in the county of Nairn. It contains a range of entries including finished sermons, notes for sermons and personal musings on theology. Each sermon records the date and location, thus identifying the author as Henry Clark. The text is written in a small and sometimes difficult hand, with numerous additional notes, frequent abbreviations, occasional corrections and amendments, and unusual contractions - suggesting the personal nature of this notebook.

The texts for his sermons are frequently followed by either "Doctrine" or "Observations" and then finished with his "Method". This latter being a numbered arrangement of the central points he wishes to bring out for his audience. This structure gives insight into how Clark conceptually analysed each sermon, sometimes (especially in "Observations") this appears to be purely to deepen his own understanding of scripture. In those sermons with an additional "Method" section, he considers his delivery in order to maximise the exposition of his faith to the congregation.
