Notebook entitled "Notes of Lectures on Moral Philosophy by Adam Ferguson L.L.D.", 1782-1783
Scope and Contents
Notebook entitled "Notes of Lectures on Moral Philosophy by Adam Ferguson L.L.D. in 4 Volumes. Vol 4th Edinburgh 1782-3". Author unknown (initials "JJ"). Later pencil scribbling on p. 9: "Thomas Loughlin" - perhaps a later owner of the notebook.
A neatly presented contemporary manuscript copy (with slight variations) of the sixth and seventh parts of Adam Ferguson's Institutes of Moral Philosophy. For the use of students in the College of Edinburgh (1769, subsequently revised in 1773 and 1785). It is probable that this was written out by one of Ferguson's students at Edinburgh, where he held the chair of moral philosophy and pneumatics from 1756 until his retirement in 1785 (when he was succeeded by his former student Dugald Stewart). Manuscript transcriptions of similarly titled works ("Notes of lectures on Moral Philosophy") by other Scottish Enlightenment authors such as James Mylne, Francis Hutcheson and William Cleghorn are listed as being held in libraries in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
