This is a bound typescript of "The Wallace", a theatre play written by Sydney Goodsir Smith. The present copy is copy no. 1 and is dated 24 June 1959; it was presented by Sydney Goodsir Smith to his father. It is inscribed in the hand of the publisher: "Sir Sydney Goodsir Smith with the Compliments of S. G. Smith, R.L.C. Lorimer & Oliver Boyd Ltd." On the back of the title plage there is a printed note that reads: "this typescript is the property of S. G. Smith and supersedes all previously circulated typescripts. 24 June 1959", with a pencil line through the words "is the property of S. G. Smith and". "The Wallace" was first broadcast on the BBC in November 1959, but was not published until 1960, by Oliver & Boyd. It was then staged at the 1960 Edinburgh Festival.
