Or Ms 187: روضته الصفاء Rawz̤at al-ṣafāʼ, 999 A.H., 1591 C.E.

Identifier: Or Ms 187

Scope and Contents

A well-known general history in seven volumes, from the earliest times to the time of the author, Sayyid Muḥammad b. Burhān al-Dīn Khawand-Shāh (d. 903 A.H., 1498 C.E.). Most of the work was written by the author himself, but was completed by his grandson Ghiyās̱ al-Dīn Muḥammad b. Ḥāmid al-Dīn Khwand-Amīr (d. 942 A.H., 1535 C.E.). This manuscript includes volumes 4-5 of the work, each with an illuminated frontispiece. They feature in reverse order.

For volumes 1-3 of this work, from the collection of the same donor, see OR MS 186, for volumes 6-7 see OR MS 188. The current manuscript appears to have been collected together with the other volumes, it has the same physical features as OR MS 188 and appears to have been produced at the same time, whereas OR MS 186 has distinct features.

There are a number of notes in English in the margins of Volume 7, these appear to be translations of the content. Into the same section is tucked a loose folio upon which what appears to be an English translation of a short section of the work has been written. The hand is similar in appearance to that of the donor David Anderson.
