Scope and Contents

A bound volume containing the details of the first animals which were brought into Edinburgh Zoo by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland.

Information captured in this volume includes the date the animal was acquired, the name (including Latin), reception number, number of animals, how acquired, habitat, previous history, date and method of departure.

The column 'date and method of departure' also contains notes as to the welfare of the animals and occasionally additional information on their arrival.

The animal registered as being the first specimen is a Gannet, dated 19th July 1913 ."Caught on Leith pier, 2nd October 1912 (the Society's first specimen). The earliest date in the volume is 3rd June 1913 for a Mongoose from India.
