Scope and Contents

This correspondence from A.A. Gould to Charles Lyell is mainly concerned with meetings, writings, and work of their mutual colleagues and friends. Lyell or his team, have summarised the letters, either on the envelope, or on the letter itself - usually in the space allocated to the address. Where there is a summary, it has been transcribed here.

  1. 'Dr. Gould List of Massach[usetts] shells' May 1842
  2. 'Dr. Gould (2) Mallotus Agassiz on S[outh] C[arolin]a Post pliocene shells. Animal matter in Mastodon bones; rec[eive]d March 12th 1847'. Much of the letter is about professorial politics at Harvard University
  3. 'Dr. Gould (3) Rec[eive]d Oct 24, 1847. Meeting of Boston Association H.D. Rogers on White Mountains - no fossils in. Dickerson [sic Dickeson] on Megolonyx of Natchez. Willey Slide & White Mountains. New Nat[ura]l Hist[or]y University at Harvard & new Hall. Koch & Cams [sic Scientific School at Cambridge] 1500 $ for the Hydrarchos. Glaciers'. Written at Boston. There are several newspaper clippings enclosed. 29 February 1847
  4. 'Dr. Gould 1849 Criticism on 2nd Visit to U[nited] S[tates'. Encloses a list of Gould's criticism on Lyell's book. Written at Boston, 12 August 1849
  5. 'Dr. Gould April 1850'. The letter is concerned with the work of their fellow colleagues. with references to Louis Agassiz, Mr. Dennett, Tuomey, James Hall, Ebenezer Emmons, Amos Binney, Elizabeth Cabot Agassiz, Louis Reeve Gibbes, Count Pourtales, and Desor . Also talks of the appearance of a Sea Serpent, that turned to be 'a - a- whale'!. Written at Boston, 30 April 1850. Glittery amber coloured seal on envelope.
  6. 'Dr. A.A. Gould April 65'. The letter is concerned with aftermath of the American Civil War, reconstruction, the Canadian question, the Confederate States of America, Lincoln’s assassination, and the Pacific Railroad. References also to British Museum, and the activities of their mutual friends. Written at Boston, 18 April 1865
