Summarised as "moths caught in mid ocean". Letter is Toynbee's response to Lyell's questions, given to him by Mrs. Smyth [may be wife of William Henry Smyth], relating to the moths caught on the Hotspur, and the data is taken from the ship log, giving details about when, where and what kind of creatures were observed: Death's head moths, finches, variegated insects that fly to light, dragonflies - he also refers to a sketch by Mrs Toynbee of a bird - not included, and describes other sketches, some of which were lost. He invites Lyell to see them.
