Scope and Contents

The compendium of poems of Shams al-Dīn Muḥammad Ḥafiẓ Shīrāzī, the famous 14th century poet. This copy begins with the qaṣīdahs, which is a somewhat unusual. In the earlier copies, the ghazals come first. The present manuscript appears to have been a complete copy of the work but lacks its final folios.

Written in black ink, with short vowles and the poet's name in red through our the work. The Arabic verses written in naskh.

On the third flyleaf is a draft letter regarding the examination by Parliament of Barlow, Governor of Madras, mentioning James Cumming, Lord Cornwallis, Murno(?), C. J. Fox and the defeat of the India Bill by the King.

Custodial History

A note on the inner side of the cover states that the manuscript was given to the note's author by Sir. H. Strachey in 1856, and gives a brief biographical details of Strachey, including the dates of his stay in India and positions held.

On the first flyleaf is the name Ḥamīd al-Din, possibly a former owner.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Purchased (via Rankine) at Dowell's sale of the Carberry Tower Library, 20-21 July 1961, lot 280 (23 volumes, £52).

Physical Description

Four flyleaves and four endleaves. Dimension 227 by 178 mm, writing surface 162 by 112 mm in average. 14 lines in each page. Written on British papers which have the dates 1794 and 1799 in their watermarks.
