Scope and Contents
Shāh u darvīsh, also known as Shāh u gidā / gadā, (King and Beggar), is an allegorical mas̲navī by Badr al-Dīn Hilālī Jughatāʾī, also known as Astarābādī, (b. Astarābād, ca. 874 A.H. /1470 C.E.; d. Herat, 936 A.H. /1529 C.E.). Its treats an innocent love between a poor pupil of a seminary and his princely classmate.
The text of the present copy begins: ای وجود تو اصل هر موجود / هستی و بودۀ و خواهی بود
The final couplet, on folio 47a reads: حشر او با رسول کن یا رب | این دعا را قبول کن یا رب
Colophon: تم بالخیر | تم | تمت هذا الکتاب بعون الملک الوهاب فی تاریخ | سنه خمس و ستین و تسعمائه کتبه | العبد المذنب سلطان مسعود | بن سلطان محمود هروی | غفر ذنوبهما | تم
It is written in fine nasta'līq, has an gold and polychrome frontispiece, with gold frames and decorated paper throughout. It includes one full page miniature painting, on folio 10b, depicting a classroom environment. The faces of the figures included appear to have been erased.
The faces are apparently erased.
The second endleaf bears a note in English.
