Scope and Contents

Lectures 3, 6, 8 and 9 on Tertiary Strata, Etna, Coral Reefs, Coal, Subterranean Momvements and Silurian. These items were distributed throughout this tranche, and had been assigned different numbers in the original list. They are all entitled 'Philadelphia'; placed together, it can be seen that they were altogether originally.

  1. Lecture 3 Philadelphia, 9 Feb 1842, Tertiary Strata, Etna. Booklet of short notes with numbered points, and list of illustrations.
  2. Lecture 6. Philadelphia 1842, Coral Reefs, 1842. Small booklet of short notes with numbered points, 1-25. Is, in fact, a composite of lectures on Corals - so, also within, the booklet is titled 'lecture 6 Boston [1845], with numbered points, overview and general short notes. Includes drawings of set up of illustrations, and list titled London 31 January 1843 .
  3. Lecture 8 Philadelphia, Coal 1842. Written in pencil: Coal – Lect. 8 Boston, Ditto 6 New York. Small booklet of short notes with numbered points 1-22, with a list of illustrations 1-12 (27 February), and ‘New York Additions’ 13-14. Last page dated London Feb 11, 1843.
  4. Lecture 9 Philadelphia, 2 March 1842 ‘Subterranean movements’, ‘Silurian’. Booklet of short notes. With both short numbered and long notes, reference to works of John Milton and to Lyell's 'Principles' volume 2. With a numbered list of illustrations, 1-14. Previously catalogued as Gen 1999/7/1.
