World War II Correspondence, 1940
Scope and Contents
Incoming letters to the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland in 1940 relating to the effects of WWII on the estate and animals. Letters include (on the topic of animals); destruction of wolves; requests for berries and nuts to feed Edinburgh Zoo animals; complaint about the howling of wolves; newspaper cutting on concern of dangerous animals escaping Edinburgh Zoo; anotated draft document for the RZSS adoption scheme; list of animals to be adopted; a Zoological Society of London adoption scheme form and a draft of an RZSS version; Edinburgh Cremation Limited giving the RZSS a stock of potatoes; offers of taking in zoo animals to the countryside. Letters relating to the estate include; advertisement for anti-splinter glass; using some RZSS estate for crops; paper rationing; loan of beds for the local defence volunteers; letters of condolence for the November 1940 bombing; training bulletin for bombing threat.
