Anquetil-Duperron, Abraham-Hyacinthe, 1804
Scope and Contents
Abraham-Hyacinthe Anquetil-Duperron (1731-1805), oriental scholar, founder of Iranian studies in Europe, 3 Autograph Letters Signed, 1804.
Letter 1: 24 September 1804. Paris. Anquietil-Duperron writes to French Politician and Orientalist Jean-Denis Lanjuinais. The letter concerns the failure of a Sanskrit dictionary project planned jointly with Isaac Antoine Silvestre de Sacy; further research into the history of religion; and an essay by Lanjuinais on Anquietil-Duperron's work on the Upanishads.
Letter 2: 12 October 1804 Paris. Stumpff notes that this letter is probably also addressed to Jean-Denis Lanjuinais. Anquetil-Duperron reaffirms his Christian faith, inspired by his research on the ancient Persians and Indians, and opposes contemporary atheists and theists. Also concerns his current Indological research on Paulinus of St Bartholomew.
Letter 3: ca. 1794. Paris. To a lady, congratulating her on the wedding of her niece. He also thanks her for her interest in his brother.
Notes by Alfred Stumpff: Short biographical notes on each Letter, with a short German summary of the contents and notes on the letters' condition. A two-page commentary in German on letter 1. A clipping from a book catalogue.
