Charles John Canning (1812-1862), Viceroy of India, Autograph Letter Signed Calcutta. 9 January, 1858, Calcutta. Letter from Charles Canning to Prince George, the Duke of Cambridge. The letter discusses the Indian Mutiny of 1857-59, which was ongoing at the time of writing. Canning writes that he is attaching relevant documents to recent British military operations at Lucknow (not included in Stumpff's Collection). He also thanks Prince George for putting an end to accusations that Canning had fallen out with the military commander in-chief of India, Sir Colin Campbell.
