Scope and Contents
Hugh Fothergill Cooke (1871-1915), British officer in India, 3 home letters (Autograph Letters Signed) 1911. All handwritten, from Fothergill Cooke to his wife Edith, and sent from Bannu.
Letter 1: 27 April 1911. Fothergill Cooke gives an account of a recent 'successful' military expedition. He describes the destruction of a village and injured men. He goes on to mention meeting a medical missionary called Pennell, who has a good relationship with the local tribes.
Letter 2: 10 March 1911. Fothergill Cooke describes recent conditions and gives updates of his activities. He discusses their finances and that he thinks it is best if she does not join him in Bannu.
Letter 3: 17 March 1911. He discusses opinions on how to properly raise babies. He narrates a recent military expedition: conditions of the march and a fight with 'the enemy' where he suffered an injury to his foot. He gives some criticisms of the Commanding Officer. He mentions Edith's health, their children and their finances.
