Scope and Contents

Eugen Prym (1843-1913), orientalist, Arabist, 4 Autograph Letters Signed 1867-1868, addenda.

8 letters, 8 envelopes.
- Letter 1: 18 June 1926. From Anna Prym to her grandmother. She tells her grandmother about her time at St. Mary's Abbey school in London, England. She tells her grandmother about school, birthdays, and going to the theatre.
- Letter 2: 3 February 1892. James Thomson sends a book "Land o' Burns" and writes some notes on Scottish spellings and phrases and their translation into English.
- Letter 3: 19 December 1867. Business letter to Eugen Prym, enclosing 25 Pounds sent to him by his father. The writer asks Prym for a receipt for the money.
- Letter 4: 20 July 1860. Mostly unreadable, but contains some reference to Prym's stay in England. Sent by Emmy Kaeseler, Calais.
- Letter 5: 7 October 1867. Prym writes to his father. He describes the apartment he has found in Oxford and is in the process of moving in. He vividly recounts to stormy crossing to Dover. He mentions having difficulty with the English language, and will visit Max Müller.
- Letter 6: 6 November 1867. Prym asks after his grandmother's health and describes the weather. He complains about English food, especially beefsteaks. He describes a street fight between the students of Magdalen college and the town youth for "Carfax Day". It appears to be Bonfire Night, considering the letter was written on the 6th of November.
- Letter 7: 1 March 1868. Prym writes to his father from Oxford. He asks for money, and for some of his books to be sent to him. Prym complains about the difficulties in receiving the post in England, and writes that the literary authors in England are too free to write what they wish, with less censorship than in Germany.
- Letter 8: 13 April Prym writes to his father from Oxford, asking if perhaps a letter has been lost, since he hasn't heard from his family in a while. He also mentions that he will travel to London soon, and asks his father for money.
- Envelopes: These go with the letters, except one. Letter 3 does not have an envelope. Also included is an envelope addressed to "Frau Prof Dr Prym" in Bonn, possibly by Eugen Prym.

Notes by Alfred Stumpff: Short biographical information, notes on Prym's career, physical descriptions of letters 5-8 and their envelopes, purchase information.
