Biographical / Historical
Robert Robinson, born 13 September 1886, died 8 February 1975, was a British organic chemist, known for his research on plant dyestuffs and alkaloids, for which he received the 1947 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Robinson studied chemistry at University of Manchester, graduating in 1905. He worked at many different Universities, including Universities, Manchester, Sydney, Liverpool, UCL, and Oxford. Robinson was a passionate amateur chess player. Robinson married twice, once to Gertrude Maud Walsh in 1912, and after her death in 1954, he remarried in 1957 to Stern Sylvia Hillstrom. Robinson was awarded many awards, including Davy Medal (1930), Royal Medal (1932) Copley Medal (1942), Franklin Medal (1947), Albert Medal (1947) and Faraday Lectureship Prize (1947). In 1947, he received the Medal of Freedom with Silver Palm.
