From a typed note pasted on the page: "Napier, Mark (1798-1879), Scottish historical biographer; was edcuated at Edinburghl advocate, 1820; sheriff-depute of Dumfriesshire, 1844; published 'The Law of Prescription in Scotland', 1839, and historical works on the earldom of Lennox, the Napiers, Montrose, and Graham of Claverhouse.
