Custodial History
Typed note in the box-file: "These calotypes, photographs made in the early years of the daguerreotype by a special process which produced Raeburn-like effects, are regarded as of such excellence as to challenge comparison with the best of modern times. They are the work of David Octavius Hill, R.S.A., the famous artist of the well-known Disruption picture, and were made in his studio at Rock House on the stairs leading up to the Calton Hill. His wife was a sister of Sir Noel Paton."
Pencil note on the flaps: "This folder is CAL 8"; "note: numbered CAL 8 1-8".
