Fifty-six letters from Leslie Cairns, 152nd Field Regiment RA, Ayrshire Yeomanry, while in Caithness, 1 July - 18 November 1941

He describes some living difficulties such as a period of being without running water and trouble with mice in the food stores. Across the letters he describes his "monthly troubles" of being tasked with balancing the accounts but takes a more positive view of his role as education officer which sees him, upon the request of other officers, teaching Spanish lessons and at one point requests Spanish reading material and grammar books to be sent to him by Irene.

He also discusses activities undertaken in his spare time including frequent trips to watch films, dances with the mess, such as one in aid of the local hospital, The Officer's Regimental party and dance and other barn dances (many of which he doesn't attend), fishing, riding a motorcycle. He often thanks Irene for parcels sent to him especially books and he discusses the books he reads too, sometimes writing quotations from them for Irene.
