Scope and Contents
This folder contains papers relating to Samuel Young (1883-1966), father of Irene J. Young, when he came to Edinburgh from Dumfries to work for the British Linen Bank in 1906. He was ultimately Head of the Securities Department of the Bank and was also a musician and trained singer of some distinction. The file includes correspondence, notes on family history, family records, and postcards.
- Letter sent from the Dumfries county committee in secondary education to Samuel Young, 29 August 1895.
- A dance calling card or programme, dated 15 December 1906 for Banks and Co; Ltd, Edinburgh. The front of the card has an intricately embossed illustration and the back of the card lists a number of dances and engagements for each dance, with handwritten names.
- An undated, mixed media greetings / Christmas card sent from Samuel Young to Emily Margaret Gordon ("Dearest Em"), with floral design on the front, a printed message and a hand written note inside.
- Four letters of recommendation with positive testimonials about Samuel Young written by professionals including a teacher, an organist and a choir master. 19 February 1906 - 21 February 1906.
- Bursars Certificate for the Edinburgh School of Cookery and Domestic Economy awarded to Emily Margaret Gordon., 1 July 1910.
- Letter sent from "Craigie" to Samuel Young on 16 October 1964, discussing his stay in hospital and updating on other acquaintances.
- Two newspaper cuttings for the "Deaths, Funerals" section of the publication, listing the death of Samuel Young on 20 August 1966 in Edinburgh.
- Two letters sent to Emily Margaret Gordon ("Mrs. Young") offering condolences for the death of her husband Samuel Young in August 1966.
