File of correspondence between Irene J. Young and Reginald S. Brown, 1948-1973
Scope and Contents
This is a folder of letters sent from Reginald Sydney Brown to Irene J. Young between 1948 and 1973. The letters begin at the start of their relationship, with Reginald writing from Natal, South Africa to Irene who was living in Durban. One notable letter was sent from Reginald on 28 July 1948, the eve of their wedding, expressing his excitement and stating, "Irene my darling, Twenty-four hours exactly!... thank you again for this wonderful privilege of loving you". Other letters sent in 1950, give updates from daily life, anniversary and birthday notes, frequent updates on their pet dog "Hannibal", a brief trip Irene took on her own to East London and anticipation of the arrival of their son, Iain Gordon Brown, while Irene is pregnant. There are multiple gift notes that would have been attached to Christmas, birthday and anniversary presents. There are multiple letters sent from Reginald to Irene in 1956 when she spent a period of time as a patient in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Between 1958 and 1973, much of the correspondence is anniversary letters, cards and gift cards from both Reginald Iain Gordon Brown.
