Photocopy of The Collected Poems of William Empson, dedicated to Irene Young, 1955 (date of original)
Scope and Contents
This is a photocopy of The Collected Poems of William Empson (1955 edition), inscribed by Empson for Irene J. Young in 1956, at the request of Gilbert Y. Kennedy: "For Mrs. Irene Brown from William Empson. 1956." There is also a photocopied note with an inscription by "Bunt" (Gilbert Y. Kennedy): "Wishing you a very happy Birthday".
A note written by Iain Gordon Brown describes that Irene J. Young's first cousin, Gilbert Young Kennedy (ultimately Head of Cancer Research at the University of Sheffield) knew Sir William Empson well from the time he became Professor of English at the University of Sheffield. Kennedy composed the music for Empson's Masque , "The Birth of Steel", performed during a visit of HM Queen Elizabeth II to the city and its university in October 1954. The text of the Masque is printed in Empson's Collected Poems (1955), pp. 85-89.
