Scope and Contents

This is a single-sheet advertising handbill for Burford's Panorama, Leicester Square, bearing the following text on its recto: "Burford's Panorama, Leicester Square. A sublime and beautiful view of Switzerland from Rigi Kulm also a view of the ruins of Pompeii, the city of the dead: and a view of Paris, taken during one of the most important periods of the recent political events" [the events refer to the French Revolution of 1848, also known as "February Revolution"]. On the verso, there are excerpts of "opinions of the press" on Burford's Panorama of Switzerland.

During this period, there were three panoramas on show at any one time. The handbill is datable from the recorded dates of exhibition of the three panoramas, to between May and September 1849.
