Biographical / Historical
Cold Norton farm near Stone, Staffordshire, was acquired by ABRO in March 1948. Its location amidst the largest concentration of dairy cows in Britain made it ideal for the collection of twin calves, one of the areas of fundamental research in ABRO's research programme. Blythbank farm was also later used to accommodate the growing numbers of cattle. Other research carried out at Cold Norton was the long-term crossbreeding experiment, which involved crossing Ayrshire, Friesian and Jersey breeds. Sheep experiments were also run there, focusing on breed comparisons, including exotic breeds, as sires of crossbred ewes and sires of slaughter lambs.
