Biographical / Historical

The Edinburgh Centre for Rural Economy (ECRE) was instituted in October 1947 and was intended as a facilitating body assisting various membership organisations across Scotland to work together and share resources. The Centre, based at Bush House on the Bush estate outside Penicuik, Midlothian, was the vision of Sir Stephen Watson, then Professor of Agriculture and Rural Economy at the University of Edinburgh. The two founder organisations were the East of Scotland College of Agriculture and the University's Department of Agriculture. In 1989 the Centre was renamed the Edinburgh Consortium for Rural Research, with its role becoming purely facilitating rather than factorial.
