Biographical / Historical

This study, in collaboration with the Agricultural Development and Advisory Service, aimed to produce at ABRO a crossbred ram (named the Damline because it produced the dams of commercial lambs) which balanced the attributes of the Finnish Landrace, East Friesian and Dorset Horn sheep breeds. Trials comparing Damline x Scottish Blackface ewes with Norder Leicester x Scottish Blackface ewes were made from 1972 to 1976. The results indicated that the Damline crossbred ewes showed earlier sexual maturity, were more prolific and weaned more lambs, but were lighter, although they had similar litter weights and flock survival. The lambs from the Damline crosses grew more slowly, but their carcass composition and grades were similar.
