Scope and Contents

Notebook containing minutes of ordinary meetings with approximately 500 pages.

Full details of the Society's business is recorded including: details of honorary, corresponding and normal membership. Also included are details of the nomination of the first lady associate, Grace Milne-Home on 04 May 1893 and the formation of a student membership class on 18 February 1892. Reports from Annual General Meetings include details of office-bearers and their election, financial details, details of the publications of Transactions of the Edinburgh Geological Society, details of donations for the Society's library and the decision to disband the museum following the opening of the Museum of Science and Arts. A list of nominated trustees for the Society accompanies a share certificate for stocks in the Great North of Scotland Railway Company. Presidents during this period were David Milne-Home (1874-1890), James Geikie (1890-1896) and John Horne.

The titles of papers read and occassionally additional information concerning them are given.

A large number of items are pasted into the notebook. These include billets of meetings, billets of excursions, lists of office-bearers and reports by office-bearers. Newspaper clippings, giving full reports of business and transcripts of the papers read, are included after most of the minutes. Additional newspaper clippings report on the annual joint excursion with the Geological Society of Glasgow. Items relating to the Jubilee meeting held on 01 November 1883 include a billet for subscriptions, newspaper reports and a printed list of attendees. A letter, dated 19 February 1895, to the society's secretary Henry M Cadell from Andrew Taylor, concerning the question of gold reserves in Scotland is tucked between the pages.
