Scope and Contents

The collection is composed of both printed and manuscript items, these being:

  1. - Manuscript letters 1835-1854, probably copies and transcribed during Lewis's research, and between Nassau William Senior (1790-1864) and Richard Whately the Archbishop of Dublin (1787-1863)
  2. - Manuscript, Minutes of Evidence,To the Chairman of the Committee appointed by the House of Commons to enquire into the present state of the Police of the Metropolis, Lyons Inn, 1 July 1828
  3. - Manuscript, beginningNotes of objections to the proposed measure of recommending to parishes, having unemployed able-bodied paupers, to hire their labour to farmers to dig or fork the farmers land at ploughing prices

Biographical / Historical

Richard Albert Lewis was from Smethwick, in the English Midlands. He was born in 1915. He studied history at the University of Birmingham, earning the degrees of B.A. and Ph.D. Lewis served in the Ordnance Corps and later the Education Corps during the Second World War, ending up in India just prior to partition in 1947.

Lewis was appointed as Lecturer in History at what was then known as University College of North Wales, Bangor (Coleg Prifysgol Gogledd Cymru). Latterly he had been Reader in History, University of Wales, Bangor (Prifysgol Cymru, Bangor). He wroteEdwin Chadwick and the public health movement 1832-1854(1952).

Richard Albert Lewis died in 2006.
