Scope and Contents

In this collection of biographical interviews scientists reflect on their early life and background, their career and involvement in British science in the twentieth century. These interviews were carried out with some former staff members of the Institute of Animal Genetics, Edinburgh, as well as individuals from other branches of science, by the Science Studies Unit, University of Edinburgh.

Existence and Location of Copies

The original recordings were made on 37 open reel tapes between 1969-1971. Cassette copies (on 12 cassettes) of the Institute of Animal Genetics recordings were made in 1995 by a researcher, Nikolai Krementsov. 71 CD-Rs were made from the original tapes by the University of Edinburgh, School of Scottish Studies. In 2015, digital copies were made from the Institute of Animal Genetics CDs by Clare Button, Project Archivist.

All copies of these recordings are held by Edinburgh University Library Special Collections: reel to reel tapes; cassette tapes (Acc.95/029); CDs and digital copies (0058000-0058010).

Copies were also sent on CD to the British Library in 1999 (catalogue no.s C1270 and C1271).
