Ex Grant Institute, the bulk of these papers are thought to have been accidentally detached from the papers of Sir Charles Lyell and Sir Archibald Geikie prior to the transfer of those collections to the custody of the University Library. In order to maintain an understanding of the chain of custody, these items are being kept together as a collection in their own right, along with a small amount of later material found with them.
