Biographical / Historical
The Physical Society was known as such until 1782 when it amalgamated with the Chirurgical Medical Society and became the Physico-Chirurgical Society. On 5 May 1788, the society was awarded the Royal Charter and became the Royal Physical Society. Finally, in 1795, the society joined with the American Physical Society although it kept the same name.
