This collection consists of two typescripts of Nigel Tranter's books Lord in Waiting (first published in 1994) and Price of a Princess (first published in 1994) on 20 x 25 cm paper bound by strings; two manuscripts of the same novels on small paper cards 10 x 16 cm, and two published copies of the books.
1. Nigel Tranter, Price of a Princess, c 1994, Autograph manuscript & typescript of this historical novel about Mary Stewart, sister of James III of Scotland, written by Nigel Tranter on index cards as he took his morning walk. The author has used twenty nine stapled, homemade pamphlets each containing five or six index cards, writing in blue or black ink, recto and verso on each card in a miniscule hand. The text is interspersed with occasional memoranda and even a sketch of "Ballinshoe Castle", no doubt on one of his morning routes. Tranter's typescript of the novel is also present with his homemade cover sheet, hole-punched, and tied with a bootlace. In the official blurb this novel is described as "A riveting tale of romance, treachery and heartbreak, set in 15th century Scotland: the story of Mary Stewart, eldest sister of James III of Scotland and her part in making Orkney and Shetland part of Scotland" - characteristically the author prefaces his typescript with his own "Possible blurb for Price of a Princess".
2. Nigel Tranter, Lord in Waiting, c 1994, Autograph manuscript & typescript of the second Mary Stewart novel, written on index cards as Nigel Tranter took his morning walk. The author has used fifty one stapled, homemade pamphlets each containing five or six index cards, writing in blue or black ink, recto and verso on each card in a miniscule hand, interspersed with occasional memoranda. Tranter's typescript of the novel is also present, with his homemade cover sheet, hole-punched, and tied with a bootlace. This is the second book in Nigel Tranter's Mary Stewart sequence, a sequel to Price of a Princess, which completes what was intended to be a trilogy. Characteristically the author prefaces his typescript with his own "Possible blurb for Lord in Waiting".
