Scope and Contents

This fonds consists of the papers of Anne M. M. Swanson relating to the BAECE (British Association for Early Childhood Education, formerly Nursery School Association (NSA)), dating from 1907 to 1993.

The papers include:

- A children's book entitled A Year of Song for a Baby in a Garden, signed and dedicated by the author Graham Robertson in 1907;
- A file with typed and manuscript documents (including minutes) relating to the NSA in 1945-46;
- Report of proceedings at one-day conference and exhibition arranged by the Scottish areas of the Nursery School Association of Great Britain on the first stage in education held in Tollcross, Edinburgh, 6 October 1951;
- A file entitled "Edinburgh - NSA - establishment branch report / history NSA", 1944-1970;
- Child Development Society Newsletter, no 21, 1972;
- A list of NSA publications between 1923 and 1972;
- "Nursery World" magazine May 1973;
- A BAECE newsletter no.4 (1981); a file containing correspondence, a photograph featuring Margaret Thatcher diving a speech at the BAECE Jubilee, and pamphlets all relating to the BAECE's Golden Jubilee in 1973;
- Three copies of a large booklet celebrating the Golden Jubilee (1923-1973) of the BAECE;
- Pamphlets relating to the Scottish Nursery Nurse Certificate 1979-1989;
- A SSRC (Social Science Research Council" review entitled "Pre-School Education in Great Britain" by Barbara Tizard, November 1974;
- Minutes of meetings of BAECE representatives from areas in Scotland, 1982-1986;
- Newspaper clippings on teachers and nurseries, 1973;
- An annual report for the 70th anniversary of the BAECE, 1923-1993;
- A small number of documents relating to the Aberdeen and London branches, 1981-c.1993;
- An unbound document entitled "Right from the Beginning: Assuring Quality in Early Education", Northern Group of Advisers, published by Gatehead MBC Education Department, late 20th century.

Biographical / Historical

Anne M. M. Swanson was the Headmistress of Hope Cottage Nursery School, Edinburgh in the 1970s. She is the author of The History of Edinburgh's Early Nursery Schools (Edinburgh: Edinburgh Branch of the British Association for Early Childhood Education, 1975).
