Custodial History

The volume starts with a manuscript text dated March 1849: "No. 3. This manuscript belongs to the public library at Kelso, and is, with the exception of a few verbal alterations, an exact copy of the foregoing. ... This manuscrtip, it is presumed, originally belonged to the Duke of Lauderdale, who was in possession of two written copies of the book before it was printed by Royston, at London in the year 1655 ..."

A more recent notecard enclosed in volume agrees that the manuscript once belonged to Duke of Lauderdale, who died in 1682, and his library was sold in 1692.

However, another notecard pasted in the volume contradicts this assumption: "Evidently not one of the two MSS commonly known to have been in the Lauderdale Collection. La.III.780 has marginal additions etc. from these MSS and on p. 267 refers to the section as missing in duobus MSS lauderdelianis which nevertheless is present in this Kelso MS. f. 140v, ff. 6-18. (But cf. La.III.780 p. 168 where the marginal addition to line 24 is in the Kelso MS. f. 90, ll. 40-41)".
