Scope and Contents

Bound manuscript entitled "Extracts, letters and documents relative to the writings of George Finlay", the philhellene, followed by the quote: "one the more / To baffled millions who have gone before". The preface in dated at Athens, 31 January 1865. Contains copies of journal extracts, of letters, of published books, of "dedications", of "documents" (such as "the communication from the Greek minister of war announcing that the silver medal for services during the war of independence was conferred on George Finlay, 14 (26) feb 1836"), and a "list of literary work by George Finlay". Mentioned names include Frank Abney Hastings, 'Odysseus', General [Thos] Gordon, James Macgregor, Lord Cochrane (Earl of Dundonald), Alexander Contostavlos (minister of finance in 1855), James Robertson, Rev. J. H. Hill (American missionary, chaplin of the British Legation in Greece), Colonel William Muse of Caldwell, Professor Cornelius Conway Felton, LLD Cambridge, etc.

Biographical / Historical

Finlay was educated at the University of Edinburgh, and in 1854 he was awarded the honourary degree of LL.D. from the University.

Includes a letter inserted in the volume indicating provenance from Anthony Seymour, addressed to Dr Murray Simpson of EUL, dated 1998. Pencilled note inside the front flyleaf: "Mr Hooke, 1 St James Place, London, SW. 1913."
