Scope and Contents
Commonplace book of John Wilson of Whitehaugh (1785-1854). The manuscript volume is split into several sections, with pagination beginning anew.
Section 1:
'The Doctrine of Rising in Life, taken chiefly from Lord Bacon'. This section includes both practical and philosophical advice, as well as a valuation of Wilson's assets at p.[1]76. Section spans pp.[1]1-84. Indexed at pages [1]85-86. The 'Lord Bacon' referenced is Francis Bacon, 1561-1626.
Section 2:
'Unconnected Remarks to be afterwards transferred to their proper places'. This section includes quotes and summations on broadly the same theme as section 1. Pagination restarts, with the section spanning pp.[2]1-115. Entries tend to be short, and are partially indexed at p.[1]86.
Section 3:
From the back. Partially exised. Pagination spans pp.[3]13-30 and initial 6 leaves have been cut from the volume. Largely drawn from Francis Bacon, with section titles:
- Rules of Health
- Travelling
- Places in England worthy of being visited
- Inventory of moveables belonging to James Gerard
- Reference to Letters in my possession which I may look upon as models of correspondence on various points. [Correspondence spans 1801-1811, with authors and a brief summary clearly stated].
