Scope and Contents
This is a manuscript volume entitled "Marbhrann Dhonnchaidh duibh", containing an elegiac poem commemorating the death of "Black Duncan of the Cowl", 1st Baronet of Glenorchy, in June 1631. Dated 1810-1820, copy of an anynomous mid-17th-century manuscript.
Pencil inscription on the fourth folio: "Facsimile of a Gaelic Eulogy on Breadlabane 1631. This is given in Vol. 3 of National MSS of Scotland, with a Translation. Chiefly curious as speaking of the fame of the subject of the Poem being known in [...] the hill in Ulster. Showing how this remained for centuries among the Descendants of the Dalriad Scots as did "Walhalla" among the Norse." Signed and dated: "L. 1897."

Custodial History
The third folio bears a later pencil inscription: "Gaelic dirge in honour of Duncan Campbell son of Colin [...], son of Colin Oig son of Duncan son of Black Colin of Rome son of Duncan the Prosperous (Lord of Lochow and 1st Lord Campbell). Originally at Taymouth in MSS of Marquis of Breadalbane."

Physical Description
Manuscript on paper (548 x 352 mm), 2 leaves, written in large Gaelic minuscule, in dark brown ink. Ornamented one-line capitals begin every other line. Late 19th-century brown cloth, manuscript leaves mounted on linen paper. Spine ends worn, joints cracked at head and foot but holding, pale browning around text.
