Notes on lectures given by David Masson on Rhetoric and English Literature, taken down by Penelope Gordon Watson. Includes printed reading list, and history of English literature.

Volume one has letter of donation pasted in, dated 31 December 1970. Volume two includes insert of privately printed reading list bound in, and a loose notecard from a previous reader at University College Oxford. They are condemnatory of Masson's syllabus, writing "how sorry I feel for C18 Scottish Students having to listen to this stuff". Identity unknown, signed 'Ry'.

Biographical / Historical

Masson studied theology at the University of Edinburgh, and was chosen for the chair of rhetoric and English literature at the University in 1865.

Two volumes. Bound in brown cloth with spine titles 'Lectures on English Literature'. Note paper of various sizes; originally four volumes, now bound into two.
