Lecture notes on English Literature given by Professor Herbert Grierson, taken down by Margaret Low and David Macrae Aitken
Scope and Contents
Fair copy of notes on lectures given by Herbert Grierson on English Literature, first taken down by Margaret Low. 77 lectures spanning October 1925-June 1926.
A donation letter [22 January 1986] laid into volume 1 informs the then University Librarian, Brenda Moon, of the complex process behind creating these fair copies. The notes were written by Rev. David Macrae Aitken on behalf of his son, James Macrae Aitken. James was a Classics student at the University of Edinburgh in 1928-1931, and was unable to take Grierson's literature class due to a timetable clash with Professor Edmund Whitaker's mathematics class. Rev. David felt it was essential that James accessed Grierson's teachings, as the literature course was a core part of the classics syllabus. Margaret Low was member of Rev. David's parish, and allowed him to copy her notes from when she took the class a few years prior.
