Biographical / Historical

Craigmillar Alcohol Interest Group was founded in August 1976 to support individuals with a problematic relationship with alcohol in this then extremely deprived area of south-east Edinburgh. Health Visitors observed a rise in young women and young mothers turning to alcohol as an antidote to their desperate social / economic situations, and then identified the need for a local service to offer counselling, help and support.

Volunteer counsellors were recruited at first in order that a local response could be offered (after which individuals would be referred to services in central Edinburgh): however, this approach proved unsuccessful in practice. A local therapy group was formed in 1979, accommodated in premises regularly used by CAIG, a flat provided by the Craigmillar Festival Society (CFS), who were involved in the management of CAIG.

CAIG founded a day centre (Craigmillar Day Centre) in May 1980, funded by the Mental Health Foundation, Lothian Regional Council Social Work Department, and Lothian Health Board. The Day Centre was to provide a community space for counselling and activities (such as artwork, which was sometimes sold to raise money for the Centre): it welcomed people with problems with alcohol, but was not exclusive to them.
