Scope and Contents

Sketchbooks and loose sketches that show designs and templates detailing measurements and other specifications for the construction various surgical instruments, artificial limbs, and other medical apparatus produced by J. Gardner & Son. There are 12 complete or partial sketchbooks in which a number of the sketches include information about the hospital or doctor who commissioned the instrument. There is also a filing system containing 102 individual sketches that is fully catalogued, as well as a number of sketches on loose sheets, some on larger scales. The items range in date from 1894 to 1954.
